My name is Dana Brown and I’m the proud owner of an adult foster care home for the elderly. With 29 years of experience in the business, I have had many quality experiences with adult foster care and have interacted with residents, families of residents, and caregivers, as well as people in the care team, including physicians, social workers, and discharge planners. I believe that between the daily rush of life and working hard day in and day out in the business of care giving that we forget to pat ourselves on the back. We owe it to ourselves for all that we do to dedicate ourselves to effectively help the frail and elderly persons for whom we provide care.

For some elderly people, adult foster care is a great alternative to residing in a nursing home. Many residents find adult foster care as comfortable as home, knowing they can age in a safe place where they don’t have to worry about the “little things,” such as home maintenance, paying bills, and taking medications properly. When a resident I once worked with was asked by his physician “who takes care of you,” the resident replied “Who do you think? My ‘girls’ take care of me.” Those “girls” he was referring to (which he said with a twinkle in his eye) were his caregivers.

I feel very fortunate to have met so many unique people throughout my years in the adult foster care business—people that care. If you genuinely care for others and have the desire to help our elderly people ultimately “graduate” back to residing in their own homes, then the adult foster care business should be very rewarding for you.

It’s not always easy to distinguish all that we do as paid caregivers. The work and accompanying stress of providing care for adult foster care residents are equal to that of family members who provide care for their loved ones within their own homes. But what is clear is that the caregiver is the prescription to make America great. While the United States may not have the best health care coverage in the world, we Americans do provide the best care for our elderly population—second to none!
Opening an adult foster care business can make you wealthy not just in the financial sense, but in mind and spirit as well. I can say in all honesty that it is now a way of life for me. Hopefully, I can instill my passion upon you. This business is far more rewarding than just any in-home business—it’s about the passion to help others around you and making America great!
